In the first quarter of 2022, Vietnam saw a 56% increase in seafood exports to Algeria, reaching a value of $780,055, primarily composed of frozen pangasius and basa filet. Despite having a long coastline, Algeria's fishing production is limited, leading to high seafood prices and reliance on imports. The country imports about 32,000 tons of seafood annually, with a turnover of $90-100 million, and imposes a 53% total import tax and fee. Vietnamese seafood, particularly pangasius and basa filet, is popular in Algeria due to its quality and price, though Covid-19 has increased freight rates and selling prices. Vietnamese businesses exporting to Algeria must comply with the country's regulations on food preservative additives and note the temporary ban on tuna and canned fishery products.
