Uruguay: Livestock industry develops comprehensive strategy to minimize damage from ticks in national rodeo

The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) is implementing the National Plan to Combat Ticks in cattle, an issue that concerns authorities, given the increase in the presence of this mite in part of the national herd. Additionally, the General Directorate of Livestock Services created an inter-institutional group with various academic sectors, trade unions, and institutes specialized in agricultural research, to work on the subject. In recent years, the tick has spread, covering new territories and its resistance has increased due to the greater use of tick-killing products. This is compounded by the effects of climate change, explained Leticia Luengo, a sanitary programs technician and one of the coordinators of the plan.
