The Northeast Oyster Breeding Center, a joint initiative by NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has been launched at the Milford Laboratory in Connecticut. The center aims to enhance oyster breeding through the development of disease-resistant strains of eastern oysters that can adapt to changing environmental conditions. The facility is equipped with the first high-density flow-through larval culture system in North America and two photobioreactors for growing oyster food. Scientists have already started the spawning process for the first generation of oysters in the renovated facility.
