Tridge summary

After months of stagnation, Vietnam's durian exports, especially to the Chinese market, are making a strong recovery. Durian prices have also risen, by around 3000-5000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram. Currently, the price of A-grade Kim Phong is about 7.3-7.8 million dong per kilogram (19.9-21.3 yuan per kilogram), and A-grade Ri6 is about 4.3-4.4 million dong per kilogram (11.8-12.0 yuan per kilogram).

Statistics from the Vietnam Customs General Department show that in June, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports amounted to 807 million USD, a month-on-month increase of over 30% and a year-on-year increase of 20.2%. This is the first time this year that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports have increased after five consecutive months of decline. Durians alone contributed about 360 million USD in exports for June, a month-on-month increase of over 70%. China, as Vietnam's largest durian export destination, imported 96,000 tons of Vietnamese durians in June, an increase of 140% from 40,000 tons in May. In addition to durians, exports of coconuts, mangoes, and passion fruits have also accelerated, contributing to the recovery of Vietnam's fruit exports.

Mr. Hoang, a durian trader, said that since June, the number of durians purchased by companies for export has increased by 2-3 times compared to before. Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina T&T Import and Export Company, said that the company regularly exports about 20 containers of frozen durians to China every month. Promoting frozen exports helps reduce the risks brought by weather changes and better control quality.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, commented that May was the time when durians officially returned to the "arena." The transaction volume in June indicates that durian exports have recovered to a stable state similar to that in 2024. So far, durians have shown strong growth momentum in multiple markets, especially mainland China, Thailand, Cambodia, and Hong Kong, China.

If this growth momentum continues, durian exports could reach 5-5.5 billion USD per month in the upcoming peak season (September to October). However, due to the increasing global supply, prices are unlikely to return to the peak levels of 2023-2024. In addition to Thailand and Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia have also joined China's official durian export market.

Currently, Vietnamese enterprises have improved their control over indicators such as alkaline young yellow and heavy metal cadmium, and many companies require fruit farmers and warehouses to conduct tests before shipment, which helps to improve the clearance rate.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association predicts that fruit and vegetable exports will continue to show a positive trend in the coming months, especially frozen durians and coconuts. The total annual fruit export value is expected to reach 6.5-7.0 billion USD, close to last year's level.
