Vietnam's rice industry has experienced a significant surge in growth, with export revenue reaching $5.3 billion over the past 11 months, a 22.4% increase from the previous year and a record high for the industry. This growth is attributed to a shift in production towards high-quality fragrant rice varieties, which are highly sought after in the international market. The Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia are the primary export markets. Additionally, Vietnam has seen a dramatic increase in rice imports, reaching $1.24 billion, due to domestic demand for cheap rice. The country is using imported rice to make vermicelli and pho, and to stabilize production. The Vietnamese rice industry is investing in ways to increase value and reduce emissions, with plans to implement a high-quality, low-emission rice project over 1 million hectares.
