Globally, Thailand, Italy, Vietnam, the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines are the leading suppliers of tuna, accounting for 95% of total imports. In 2023, Canada's tuna imports fell to a 10-year low of 35,000 tons, marking a 24% decrease from the previous year. Despite Thailand's dominance in the Canadian market, there's a noticeable shift towards diversifying tuna sources, with imports from Vietnam, Indonesia, and Ecuador on the rise. Vietnamese tuna, in particular, has significantly increased its presence in Canada, with its market share growing from US$21 million to US$34 million over five years. However, processed and canned tuna remain the primary forms of tuna imported into Canada, making up over 80% of total imports, with Vietnam holding a 13% market share, trailing behind Thailand's 52% and Italy's 15%.
