Bulgaria has seen a 7% decrease in milk purchases in the first five months of the year, according to the Center for Economic Research in Agriculture (CAPA), due to increasing production costs and unprofitability. The total milk purchased for 2022 is predicted to fall to 665 thousand tons. However, the average purchase prices for 2022 are expected to rise to BGN 0.79/kg for cow's milk and BGN 1.58/kg for sheep's milk. The high costs of concentrated feed and roughage are also contributing to the challenge. Duty-free imports of grain from Ukraine may help reduce feed prices for livestock farmers. Until July 29, 2022, farmers can apply for short-term loans of up to BGN 15,000 at a 2% interest rate to help with financial challenges.
