Unseasonal rains and hailstorms across India from March 3, 2023, caused significant crop losses, especially in wheat-growing states. Despite the challenges, central government officials remain optimistic that wheat production will not be significantly affected, with estimates showing a minimal loss of one per cent, which is approximately 10 million tonnes. The Union agriculture ministry anticipates a record wheat output of 112.2 million tonnes for the 2022-23 rabi harvest season, an increase from the previous year's production. These unpredictable weather patterns have also been beneficial for the late-growing wheat crops expected to be harvested in April. However, the continued rainfall and thunderstorm activity predicted by the India Meteorological Department until March 31 could have adverse effects on vegetables, pulses, and other crops.
