A recent parliamentary inquiry in Morocco has brought to light issues in the distribution chain of white meat, despite the industry's success amidst an economic crisis. The report highlighted violations of health standards in the transportation of live chickens and the unregulated market control by 'riacha' middlemen, who dominate the supply of up to 90% of chicken and 10% of turkey meat. The majority of chicken sales occur through traditional markets, bypassing approved slaughterhouses, and the poultry sector's investors fail to anticipate market demands, contributing to price instability and quality concerns. The findings suggest the need for enhanced regulation, improvement of small points of sale, and addressing the transportation and production cost factors contributing to recent price increases.
