During his state visit to Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed a protocol allowing Zimbabwean avocados to be exported to China. This follows a similar agreement for Kenyan avocados in 2022 and South African avocados in 2023, making Zimbabwe the latest in Africa's leading avocado-producing countries to gain access to the Chinese market. The export volumes and associated costs will be determined by the protocol's sanitary and phytosanitary requirements. Zimbabwe also plans to expand its avocado planting area and is working to open the Chinese market for blueberries, pecans, and macadamia nuts.
