Morocco is the world's leading exporter of canned sardines, with a total of 152 thousand and 137 tons exported in 2022, valued at approximately 5.9 billion dirhams. The sardine fishing industry is crucial to Morocco's marine fishing sector, accounting for 64% of the total fish caught. However, the sector faces challenges such as climate change, overfishing, global crises, sustainability of fish resources, biodiversity of marine systems, and high energy costs. Despite these challenges, the sector has shown resilience and was able to maintain its activities during the Covid-19 crisis.
