China's surging coffee demand, notably among young professionals and students in various cities, is creating opportunities for global coffee suppliers. The trend has increased domestic consumption, reaching 3.08 million bags in 2022/23, and is projected to hit 5 million bags in 2023/24. A major coffee producer, Brazil has seen a threefold increase in shipments to China in 2023. Tridge's solutions, including Transaction Data Service (TDS) and the Outlook Report, provide valuable insights for both exporters and Chinese importers looking to navigate and capitalize on the growing coffee market in China.

The surge in coffee demand among young professionals and college students in China has created a notable shift in the coffee landscape, extending beyond major cities like Beijing and Shanghai to mid-sized cities such as Hefei and Heshan. This growing trend is reflected in increased domestic consumption figures. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee consumption in China reached 3.08 million 60-kilogram (kg) bags in the 2022/23 period, indicating a substantial 15% increase compared to the previous year. Projections from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggest that this trend is set to continue, with expected consumption reaching 5 million bags in 2023/24. If realized, this would position China as the seventh-largest consumer of coffee globally.

The increasing demand for coffee in China comes as positive news for coffee producers, particularly as they are already benefiting from high coffee prices driven by adverse weather conditions in some major growing regions like Colombia. This is evident in the current market, where Arabica coffee futures are trading near the highest levels in eight months, and robusta coffee prices reached their highest point in 15 years last week. The combination of robust demand from China and supply challenges in key coffee-producing areas contributes to the overall bullish trend in coffee prices.

The rising coffee demand in China is a positive trend for coffee exporters from Africa and South America, the primary sources of coffee consumed in China. Brazil, a major coffee-producing country, has notably benefited from this increased demand. As the Council of Coffee Exporters of Brazil (CECAFE) reported, Brazil's coffee shipments to China experienced a remarkable threefold increase in 2023. This surge allowed Brazil to surpass 1 million bags in exports to China for the first time, solidifying China as its eighth-largest market. This development underscores the growing significance of China in the global coffee trade landscape.

While Chinese coffee consumption may currently be surpassed by major consumers like the United States and Brazil, the significant growth signals a notable cultural shift in China. Traditionally a tea-loving nation, this transformation mirrors patterns seen in other Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, where coffee consumption has risen steadily. The trend suggests that China is becoming an increasingly crucial market for global coffee suppliers. The next five years are poised to witness further growth in coffee consumption in China, presenting lucrative opportunities for suppliers looking to capitalize on this evolving market.
