Malian Mangoes Drive High Demand in Morocco

A Malian mango exporter reports that the 2023/24 season is progressing well, with higher volumes and demand. Moreover, the Amelie variety began harvesting on March 15, 2024 and is expected to end the season later. The volume increase is due to improved climatic conditions in the country, with optimal flowering conditions and more large calibers available. Moroccan demand is strong, with over 100 tons of Amelie mangoes exported to Morocco in less than a month. There is an expectation of even greater demand once the Keitt variety is on the market and a pick-up in demand from European markets following their participation at the last Fruit Logistica exhibition. Malian mangoes stand out from other West African origins due to more sunshine, a more extended season, and a unique taste. Prices for the Malian mangoes remain unchanged, as the interprofession has decided to keep the same prices as last season. The season is expected to be successful, with the Kent and Keitt varieties expected to close later.

Alphonso Mango Prices Surge as Maharashtra Market Saw High Supply

The Maharashtra Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) Fruits market is experiencing a significant influx of Alphonso mangoes, with over 65 thousand boxes arriving. Indian farmers are hastening their harvesting due to increasing temperatures, which could lead to adverse weather conditions like heavy winds and rainfall, potentially causing losses. The record supply is expected to continue rising as farmers aim to recover the USD 167.91 (INR 14,000) spent on treating Alphonso trees. In Apr-24, Alphonso mango prices ranged from USD 2.40 to 8.40 per dozen (INR 200 to 700 per dozen), with retail prices varying from USD 4.20 to 13.19 per dozen (INR 350 to 1,100 per dozen). Karnataka also contributes to the market supply, with its mangoes priced between USD 0.72 per kilogram (kg) and USD 1.2/kg (INR 60/kg and INR 100/kg).

China's Mango Prices Decline Steadily in Q1-24

In Q1-24, mango prices in China have steadily declined, with the trend intensifying each month. The primary mango-producing region, Hainan Province, is facing heightened sales pressure due to earlier harvests. Mango prices plummeted by 17.83% year-over-year (YoY) and 18.22% YoY in Jan-24 and Feb-24, respectively. In Mar-24, the influx of mangoes from Guangxi Province further bolstered market supply, causing a 29.22% YoY drop. The primary varieties in China, such as Shuixian and Xiaotainong, have also experienced consistent YoY price declines. Additionally, increased ripe fruit added to the sales pressure, leading to further price reductions in Mar-24.
