A new banana production and processing unit in Mozambique has started exporting its produce, reinforcing the country's position in the regional banana market. Owned by Bananalândia Lda. and located in the Moamba district, the unit covers 900 hectares, costing around US$20 million to build, and employs 1,000 people. It has an annual production capacity of 3.5 million boxes for export. The company is already a key player in Mozambique's banana industry, which faces challenges like Panama disease and the Banana Bunchy Top Virus. Despite these challenges, banana production in Maputo province is estimated to reach 249,829 tonnes, contributing 3.9% to the province’s total agricultural production value.
