Clove cultivation in Malaysia was recorded in the colonial period but is now grown on a non-commercial scale in Malaysia. The Department of Agriculture used to carry out several clove cultivation projects in the early 1960s and early 1980s, mainly in the tropical islands around the Peninsula and some inland areas. However, the clove cultivation project was found to be less successful because the farmers were not interested in this crop which provided little income and a very complicated process. Malaysia now imports cloves from several countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Vietnam. Most of these imports are in the form of dried cloves and are durable in storage.
