South Africa's chicken industry has suffered significant losses, with over 3.78 million birds lost since Jun-23 due to a new and highly-pathogenic strain of avian influenza. This outbreak initially started in May-23 in Mpumalanga province and has since spread to other regions of the country. As a result, there is a looming shortage of eggs and poultry meat, which is anticipated to lead to higher prices in the market.
