A number of local farmers in Luwu regency in South Sulawesi have been successful in finalizing an export of 10 MT of premium-quality white pepper to China via Makassar Port. This shipment is the second shipment of premium-quality white pepper from this region to China after the first shipment conducted in December last year. Unlike other white pepper varieties like lampong white pepper, most of the white pepper produced in this region is the belitong variety that has a bigger peppercorn size and a stronger taste, hence making the price considerably higher compared to the other varieties. Moving forward, the government in this region is planning to promote the white pepper commodity from this region more aggressively to enable the farmer to book at least 3 export deals annually in 2021, with other countries in Eastern Asia such as South Korea and Hong Kong as the targeted market destination.
