Bitter bean season in Malaysia is usually between July and October. In this season bitter bean is easier to find in the local market at cheaper prices. Although bitter bean is a famous dish, cultivation in Malaysia is very limited. The Bitter bean usually found in the local market still grows wild and gets collected in the forests of Perak, Kelantan, and Pahang - they are not cultivated by farmers. At this moment, Malaysia imports a small amount of bitter bean from Indonesia during the off-season.
