The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) is imploring foreign and local investors to invest in cross-breeding of cows, artificial insemination to improve breeds and milk yield in the country. A typical Nigerian dairy cow produces 1-2 liters of milk per day as against foreign breeds such as Holstein Friesian, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Aryshire that can produce 15-40 liters per cow in a day. Currently, Nigeria spends USD 1.2 billion per year on the imports of dairy products which portends glaring opportunities to fix these market inefficiencies.
