South Korea has significantly increased its commitment to global food aid by doubling its annual rice donation to 100,000 tons, up from 50,000 tons. This enhancement was celebrated at a ceremony in Gunsan Port, Jeollabuk-do, marking a significant step since South Korea joined the UN Food Assistance Convention in 2018 and following a decision made at the G7 summit last year. The expanded aid program will benefit 11 countries, including five new African nations, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, aiding around 2.6 million people, such as refugees and other vulnerable groups. Furthermore, South Korea is promoting the 'K-Rice Belt construction project' to boost rice production in African countries with high-yield rice seeds, showcasing its remarkable journey from a food aid recipient to a donor country in just fifty years.
