Inland Fisheries Ireland seized over 13 kilometres of illegal fishing nets, along with 248 other illegal fishing equipment and 375 illegally caught fish, during their patrols and inspections in 2020. Unless licensed, the use of nets for catching fish in freshwater is illegal due to the ecological damage they cause to fish populations and habitats. The agency takes a strict stance on illegal net use, often bringing cases directly to court where offenders can face fines and prison terms. The public is encouraged to report incidents of illegal fishing to assist in the protection and conservation of fish populations and fisheries for future generations.
