In 2020, Spain remained the leading European country in fresh vegetable production, with a slight decrease to 9.9 Mt from 10.11 Mt in the previous year, primarily due to a significant drop in onion harvest. Tomatoes were the most cultivated vegetable, followed by peppers, onions, and lettuce. The shift in production towards peppers is attributed to the competitive export market for tomatoes. Italy and France followed in second and third place with 6.57 Mt and 5.6 Mt of fresh vegetable production, respectively. While Italy's fruit vegetable harvests saw growth, France experienced a slight decline, particularly in tomato production.
