A fishery in the South Kuril zone east of Shikotan island has reported significant catches of sardines, with the maximum daily catch reaching 630 tons, and the average catch per vessel being 172 tons, resulting in a total weekly catch of 8578 tons. On the other hand, mackerel catches were low, with some vessels catching up to 5 tons per day and an average of 0.8 tons per vessel. The total sardine catch as of July 7 was 124,954 tons, a 236% increase from the previous year, while the mackerel catch was 2213 tons, a 26% increase. The fishery also reported that foreign vessels, mainly from Taiwan, South Korea, and China, were operating in the area for saury fishing, with a total catch of 12.2 thousand tons by the end of June.
