Statistics South Africa has reported that the country's annual headline inflation rate rose to 4.4% in April, its highest since February 2020, primarily due to increases in transport and food prices. The rise in the transport sector was largely attributed to a surge in fuel prices, with inland 95-octane petrol reaching a record high of R17.32 per litre. The food sector, particularly meat, milk, eggs & cheese, and oils & fats, also saw significant price increases of 6.3%, 7.8%, and 16.7% respectively. Furthermore, the annual rate for alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased to 4.8%.
