A mass sunflower harvest has been underway in southern Bulgaria for a week. Compared to 2024, farmers sowed 200 thousand decares more sunflower seeds this spring, but the initial yields, especially south of the Stara Planina mountain range, are catastrophic. In the Burgas region, around 100-150 kilograms are harvested per decare, while in the Plovdiv region, it is between 80 and 100 kilograms, producers from the National Association of Grain Producers (NAZ) reported to sinor.bg. In normal years, the harvest was three times larger, with farmers harvesting between 340 and 360 kg per decare. Even last summer, despite a similar drought and high temperatures, farmers still harvested 198 kg per decare. In an interview with bnt, the chairman of the Plovdiv Grain Producers' Union, Lyudmil Rabotov, explained that this year the industry will incur a huge loss – about 100 leva per decare.
