A flock of 1,300 sheep and goats reclaims the tradition of transhumance in the heart of Madrid.

More than 1,100 Merino sheep and 200 Guadarrama and Guisandera goats paraded through the center of Madrid on that Sunday during the 2025 Transhumance Festival, a playful, social, and historic event that seeks to advocate for extensive livestock farming as a tool for biodiversity conservation and the fight against climate change. The city center was overwhelmed at noon as the sheep and their shepherds, dressed in traditional attire, were joined by demonstrations and popular races that required numerous traffic closures. The sheep, guided by the Transhumance and Nature Foundation, left the Casa de Campo at 10:00 a.m. to follow the traditional route, arriving at Cibeles around 1:00 p.m. The colorful celebration is complemented by groups dressed in regional costumes, musicians, and traditional dances.
