EU: The price of chicken may skyrocket

Almost every week, a wide variety of large companies join a now significant animal welfare standard, which, according to industry calculations, would alone increase the production price of chicken by more than a third. The participating companies – fast food restaurants, food processors and accommodation providers – are in principle acting against themselves when they vote for the more expensive raw material, but their commitment largely stems from the expectations of their consumers. Animal welfare issues rarely reach the stimulus threshold of the average person, and even producers who are not directly affected are not always aware of the impact of tightening the rules on the sector.
