During the agricultural year of July 2022-June 2023, several African countries purchased record amounts of Russian wheat, including Libya, Mauritania, and Liberia. Algeria also set a record by importing 2.145 million tons of Russian wheat. Additionally, Egypt remains the largest buyer of Russian wheat in Africa, purchasing 8.24 million tons last season. The director general of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) expects that export volumes to Africa in the current agricultural year will likely be comparable to the previous season, with potential for increasing exports to countries where the share of Russian grain is currently low.
