(Sinan=Yonhap News) Reporter Jo Geon-yeong = A pine wood nematode disease has been detected on Jaeundo Island in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province.
On the 26th, Sinan County announced that nine pine trees in the forest of Songjang-ri, Jaeum-myeon, have been confirmed to be infected with pine wood nematode disease.
In response, the county plans to conduct a full survey of the forest within a 20-hectare radius of the infection site in collaboration with the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute and the National Institute of Forest Science.
The county also prohibits the export of pine trees from Jaeundo Island and operates monitoring posts.
The pine wood nematode disease blocks the nutrient and water transport channels of pine trees, causing infected trees to die rapidly.
A county official said, "We will make every effort to control the pine wood nematode disease and restore the area to its original state as soon as possible" and "We ask for the active cooperation of the citizens, including the prohibition of unauthorized movement of pine trees."
