La Fauba and the Inta created an app that predicts when the most sensitive stages of the crop will occur. This allows for deciding planting dates that avoid frost or heat that lower yields. It already has 50 thousand users in the southern cone.

At certain times of the year, it is more common for frosts or extreme heat to occur. We cannot prevent this, but we can avoid it coinciding with the most sensitive stages of crops. In the case of wheat, our main cereal, this period occurs during the emergence of the ear and flowering. That is why the Faculty of Agronomy of the UBA (Fauba) and the INTA developed Cronogen Wheat, a software that predicts when these stages will happen, and thus avoid adverse weather events. It is a free, open-source tool and 50% more accurate than others. A great addition for producers and breeders in the southern cone that is already preparing to make the leap to the USA and Europe. "For an agricultural producer, the main objective is to achieve the highest yields. For this to happen, it is key that everything goes well during a stage called the critical period," said Daniel Miralles, a Cerealiculture teacher at Fauba.
