The sugar industry in South Africa and Africa is advancing with expansion and empowerment projects. The South African Cane Growers Association (SA Canegrowers) has partnered with Proudly South African (Proudly SA) to boost local sugar purchases. Tongaat Hulett's transformation initiative, Uzinzo Sugar Farming, has seen success in its second harvest season, becoming debt-free and tax compliant. The Kilombero Sugar Company in Tanzania has received approval for a $238.5 million expansion project, set to increase sugar production by 144,000 tons and potentially benefit small-scale growers. The project aims to reduce losses from the rainy season, construct additional storage and packaging facilities, and increase direct employment.
