Sunflower oil from Nepal is being imported into India, leading to concerns from the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) about the impact on the vegetable oil refining industry. The cheaper price of Nepalese sunflower oil is threatening to close small and medium-sized refiners in India. The SEA has raised concerns about the massive imports of soybean oil from Nepal and the violation of rules of origins under the SAARC Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA). The SEA has proposed that imports of zero duty edible oil from Nepal be channeled through a public sector agency like NAFED to regulate the market and make edible oil more accessible to consumers.
