Exports make up 12.5 to 15.5% of the production, with the primary markets being Russia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Netherlands. The Field Crops Research Institute is instrumental in developing high-quality, disease-resistant onion varieties, including some suitable for saline lands and drought conditions. These varieties are not only enhancing production efficiency but also meeting the demands of both local and international markets. Onions, a staple in Egyptian diet and trade since ancient times, are celebrated for their nutritional benefits and spiritual symbolism, underscoring their importance in the country's agricultural sector.
