The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Mexico is combating drought effects on livestock by establishing forage prickly pear nurseries in arid zones of five entities. The project, funded by 1.9 million pesos, will initiate in Zacatecas, benefiting farmers and ranchers. The aim is to increase national production of forage nopal, a drought-resistant plant that requires less water, to improve cattle feeding in semi-arid zones and reduce pressure on wild populations. The project also includes technical studies, installation of drip irrigation systems, preparation of biofertilizer, and training for technicians and producers.
