The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council (Agrifish) has made decisions that will affect fishing in Italy, particularly impacting the Imperia fleet. The initial EU proposal suggested significant reductions in fishing days and quotas for certain species in areas covered by GSAs 9, 10 and 11, as well as changes to hake fishing systems with a catch limit. However, thanks to negotiating by Italian Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and diplomatic efforts, the proposed cuts have been reduced, and Italy will now only face a 6% cut in deep-sea shrimp quotas. This compromise aims to balance the need for marine resource sustainability with the economic needs of local fishing businesses, allowing for some adjustments to help meet tourist demand for seafood during peak seasons.
