Ahmet Mutlu, the President of the Eastern Black Sea Fisherman's Cooperatives Association, has expressed concern over the 2023-2024 fishing season due to a significant lack of bonito and horse mackerel. Despite the availability of bulk anchovies, many fishermen are still struggling, with some even leaving the profession. Mutlu attributes the decrease in fish populations to climate change and overfishing, with warming waters causing fish to migrate away from Turkish waters.
