Recent wildfires in northern Algeria have left dozens dead, hundreds of homes destroyed, and thousands of hectares of forest, vegetation, and croplands, including olive groves in Kabylia, destroyed. The fires, which have affected 26 of 58 Algerian prefectures, are believed to be linked to severe drought and poor farming practices. The full extent of the damage to the olive harvest and farmers is yet to be assessed. The government has accused Morocco and Israel of supporting the arsonists, leading to increased scrutiny of their relations. The United Nations highlighted the need for prevention measures and investment in firefighting infrastructure following the numerous fires in the Mediterranean basin, which have been worsened by high temperatures.
