Spain: Almeria suffers from new fishing restrictions imposed by Europe

Andalusian fishermen, especially those from Almería, have been dealt a hard blow by the recent decision of the European Council of Ministers to reduce by 10% the catch limits for red and blue shrimp in Spanish and French waters. This measure, which also affects other key species for the local economy such as langoustine, monkfish and sole, has a direct impact on the fishing sector of the Andalusian Mediterranean, with a special impact on the ports of Almería, Málaga and Granada. The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has explained that, although the number of working days will remain the same as in 2024, the new restrictions on catches will be implemented on the condition that additional measures are complied with regarding meshes, closed seasons and flying doors, which are considered essential for the sustainability of the ecosystem.
