Europe is currently experiencing its most severe epidemic of avian influenza, with over 40,000 laying hens culled and the situation worsening as winter approaches. The main strain, H5N1, is potentially dangerous to humans, though human-to-human transmission has not been proven. Since October, Germany has seen 46 poultry outbreaks and 394 infections in wild birds, among 675 wild bird infections and 534 farm outbreaks across Europe. The epidemic, which spreads through migratory birds, is expected to surpass last season's damages. The prevention of bird flu in poultry relies heavily on biosecurity measures.
