Tridge summary

The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has released the final production estimates for 2024 cereal and oilseed crops, showing a 13% decrease to 20.0 Mt due to the wettest season on record. The estimates, which are in line with AHDB's provisional figures, make it the smallest harvest since 2020. The availability of wheat has slightly increased, leading to a surplus for export or free stock, while spring barley production has declined, resulting in a tighter balance. Oat production estimates have been slightly reduced, leaving the balance of supply and demand at 251 Kt. The focus is now on harvest 2025, with AHDB expecting an increase in planted wheat area and a decrease in barley area. The next set of AHDB UK cereal supply and demand estimates will be released in January 2025.

While most spring crops fared better, according to today’s figures, total production of wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape contracted by 13% on the year in 2024 to 20.0 Mt. This was in line with AHDB’s provisional estimate made in October, and remains the smallest harvest since 2020. ...
