The sugar beet farming sector in the EU is facing a difficult season due to unpredictable weather and increased pest and disease pressure, leading to low sugar content and reduced yields. The loss of 30 active substances for crop protection since 2018 and the likelihood of losing more by 2027 have exacerbated these challenges. The sector is in urgent need of financial support for research and development, and new tools such as New Genomics Techniques, which are currently unauthorized in the EU. The loss of access to the UK market and the opening of the EU market to imports are also negatively impacting the sector's productivity and competitiveness. The author calls for the introduction of mirror clauses or measures in trade agreements to protect EU producers.
