In the first eight months of 2022, Brazil experienced a significant increase in fresh apple imports, with expenditure reaching US$ 57 million, a 87% rise compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. This surge, marked as the third highest on record since 1997 for the Secretariat, was primarily due to a severe shortfall in domestic production. This shortage was largely attributed to adverse weather conditions, notably droughts during the critical fruit-filling period, which negatively impacted the 2021/22 harvest. As a result, Brazil's trade balance faced a deficit of nearly US$ 32 million. The main apple suppliers for the Brazilian market were Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, contributing 72%, 19%, and 4% of the total imports, respectively. Chile saw a notable uptick in its apple exports to Brazil, becoming the leading supplier and helping to offset the domestic production decline.
