Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Elizabeth Galdo, has announced plans to export donkey meat to China, though the feasibility of the venture is being questioned due to the limited production of donkey meat in Peru and the small scale of the global market for the meat. The demand for donkey meat and skins is driven by the production of the medicinal gelatin Ejiao, used in traditional Chinese medicine for its antioxidant properties and to treat various conditions. However, the trade in donkey skins from Africa to China has raised concerns about the potential spread of dangerous diseases like MRSA. Donkey meat, which is rich in iron and protein, but also fat, is already sold in the Bolivian market, often mislabeled as beef.
