Belgium has been placed at high risk for bird flu by the Belgian Food Safety Authority (AFSCA) due to the virus's spread across Europe. The authority has mandated that poultry must be kept in free-range cages starting November 15, following the identification of a highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza in a goose in Schilde. This is the first case of infection in wild poultry since March 2021. Agriculture Secretary David Clarinval is implementing a containment policy to prevent the transmission of the virus in poultry and minimize damage to farmers. Meanwhile, Norway has reported an outbreak of avian influenza H5N1 on a farm in the Rogaland area, leading to the death of 221 birds and the culling of the remaining 7,000.
