In a significant effort to combat bird flu, France has vaccinated 26 million ducks, with 5 million awaiting a second dose and some already on their third. This initiative by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty has led to a notable decrease in virus pressure and a substantial reduction in bird flu outbreaks compared to the previous year, thanks in part to enhanced hygiene measures. As a result, foie gras production in France, which dominates nearly 70% of the European market and over two-thirds of the global market, has seen a 21% increase in 2023 after experiencing a decline the year before. Despite this success, the vaccination campaign has prompted trade restrictions from several countries, including the UK, Japan, and Canada, which have closed their borders to French foie gras. France is actively working to reopen these borders and resume trade.
