Since 2021, the world has been grappling with outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), with the US experiencing its worst outbreak, leading to the loss of 58 million birds. In 2022, the virus spread to Central and South American countries like Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela, with Chile also reporting new cases. Affected countries have been implementing various strategies to contain the outbreaks. Brazil, a major chicken meat exporter, is taking preventive measures to avoid similar outbreaks, given the potential economic and social impact. The World Organization for Animal Health recommends culling all birds on affected and at-risk farms to control the disease, understanding the economic losses this causes for producers.
