Brazilian banana producers are using a fungus, Beauveria bassiana, selected by the São Paulo State Department of Agriculture and Supply to control the banana borer, a pest that can reduce plant productivity by 30%. The fungus is produced by 85 biofactories in Brazil and is used on 5,000 hectares of bananas. The São Paulo Agricultural Research Corporation (IB-APTA) guides over 80 biofactories in the development of biological control agents. The use of this biological control agent, which targets a specific pest, offers benefits such as leaving no residue in food, being safe for rural workers, protecting biodiversity, and preserving pollinators.
