Bangladesh has formally requested India to ensure the annual supply of five crucial food items - rice, wheat, onions, ginger, and garlic - to help stabilize market prices and prevent shortages. Despite ongoing negotiations, the two countries have not yet finalized an agreement, mainly due to India's sensitivities over exporting these essential commodities. India had previously imposed bans on the export of wheat, non-basmati rice, and onions to satisfy its domestic demand but has made exceptions for Bangladesh and other countries on a case-by-case basis. Bangladesh's request, made during Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud's visit to India, aims to secure fixed quotas for these items to safeguard against future export restrictions and ensure price stability for essential goods.
