Beehive theft in South Africa has surged over the past five years, with the annual theft rate rising from 10% to 40%, particularly in the Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo, and North West. The South African Bee Industry Organization suspects commercial bee producers may be behind the thefts, which often result in the stolen beehives being burnt after the bee frames are transferred. The thefts have caused significant financial losses for bee producers and have been condemned due to their negative impact on food security and biodiversity.
