The Slovenia-based European Beekeepers' Association protests against the already agreed decision by the European Commission to increase the quota for duty-free imports of honey from Ukraine into the community to 35 thousand tons annually from the current 6 thousand tons, reported the online publication Economic Pravda. A letter to this effect has been sent to the EC. The industry organization calls for the decision to be postponed until a more reliable quality control system for imported honey from Ukraine is introduced. The association emphasizes that the honey market in the EU is currently facing increasing competition from cheap imported products, which are often of questionable quality and unclear origin against the backdrop of the lack of effective control mechanisms.
